Technical information on GURL Friday

Limitations

GURL Friday and the GURL Friday Assistant must remain named GURL Friday and GURL Friday's Assistant. If you rename either file, they will not be able to find each other to run the many handy FileMaker Pro scripts that automate so many functions of GURL Friday.

The Category and Content lists can become very long and slow to scroll through in their popup menus. The announced release of relational FileMaker should help this.

There is a 32 megabyte limit on the size of any copy of GURL Friday. That would be over 35,000 GF-URLs!

Sorting large databases can be slow on some Macs. We are eagerly awaiting the PowerPC native versions of FileMaker and AppleScript.

System Requirements

Where do I get Netscape and Applescript?

Presumably you already have a recent version of Netscape. If you don't, you can download it from their web site. It should be free for the near term.

Getting AppleScript is slightly tougher. The current version is 1.1, but we are expecting to see a PowerPC native version in the next few months. It's not available for free anywhere, but it is bundled with several other useful products.

  • Upgrade to System 7.5 with the System 7.5 upgrade CD-ROM Kit. AppleScript is bundled on this CD-ROM.
  • Read about ApleSecript with a book called The Tao of AppleScript, Second Edition, by Derrick Schneider. The book is published by BMUG and Hayden Press, and sells at your local bookstore for $29.95. AppleScript is bundled with this book.
